Last night’s Pound 2019 finals delivered some of the most exciting Super Smash Bros. Melee action of the year, with Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma fighting his way through the loser’s bracket to win the event after a rare winner’s-side loss at the hands of his longtime nemesis Joseph “Mang0” Marquez. Unfortunately, however, Hungrybox’s electrifying victory was quickly overshadowed by a disgruntled spectator who tossed a steamed blue crab at the Team Liquid player as he sat on the stage after grand finals.

After the crab-throwing incident, the tournament organizers of the Maryland event quickly cracked down on the thrower, promising to ban him from future events.

Though the Pound organizers did not publicly state the name of the spectator behind the incident, one witness inside the venue identified him as New Jersey player Sam “SonOfAShepherd” Borai.

Though the thrower’s actions were despicable, many Melee players took to Twitter to make it clear that his decision to throw the crab did not reflect the sentiments of the community as a whole. Additionally, many prominent voices from the Smash community and beyond condemned the actions of the thrower.

Crab-throwing incident aside, Pound’s top eight was an exciting reminder that Melee is still as entertaining as ever. The event also featured a Smash Ultimate tournament, with Elliot “Ally” Carroza-Oyarce capturing gold by defeating Robert “Myran” Herrin in grand finals.
