In a tweet last night, top Super Smash Bros. Melee professional Weston “Westballz” Dennis announced his release from G2 Esports.

Prior to joining G2 in mid-2016, Westballz spent a year playing for Tempo Storm. For almost three years, Westballz was G2’s only Smash player, repping the organization through career highlights such as his top-eight finish at Evolution Championship Series 2016, which carried the Falco main to a top-10 spot in that year’s edition of SSBMRank. With yesterday’s announcement, G2’s roster no longer includes a Super Smash Bros. Melee or Ultimate player.

Westballz’s release from G2 comes at a sensitive time for Melee. Earlier this year, Evo announced that it would be removing Melee from its lineup, and sponsors have since turned their attention towards the recently released Smash Ultimate. In January, Tempo Storm released Johnny “S2J” Kim from their roster after one of the strongest years of the Captain Falcon’s career. Westballz’s announcement is the latest in an unfortunate sequence of Melee players retiring or becoming free agents in the wake of Ultimate’s release.

Westballz remains a top-level Melee player with one of the strongest personal brands in the world of Smash, and he will likely find a new sponsor soon. But the Falco main is no longer as highly ranked as he was when he signed on with G2, and this news may motivate him to kick his practice regimen up a notch in order to recapture the glory of 2016.
