Tomorrow, 16 of the world’s most prominent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players will come together under one roof for the first-ever Smash Ultimate Summit, a weekend-long invitational event hosted by streaming organization Beyond the Summit.

This isn’t the first Smash event of its kind—BtS has hosted seven successful Melee invitationals since 2015, and VGBootCamp hosted a Summit-style Smash 4 invitational in 2017. However, it’s the first invitational to bring members of both the Melee scene and the former Smash 4 scene together under the auspices of Smash Ultimate.

This isn’t just a unique opportunity to see big personalities from very disparate Smash scenes interact—it’s a sight that will likely become increasingly rare as the Smash Ultimate metagame develops. Some Melee legends, such as Adam “Armada” Lindgren and William “Leffen” Hjelte, have expressed an interest in serious careers in Ultimate, but most, including Joseph “Mang0” Marquez and Justin “Plup” McGrath, have stated on their personal streams that they prefer Melee’s faster pace and will likely return to the older title full-time once the hype surrounding Ultimate dies down a bit.

Furthermore, future Ultimate Summits will likely invite players based entirely on their ranking, favoring former Smash 4 professionals whose fundamentals better apply to the Switch title.

Of course, the non-Melee pros at the Ultimate Summit are exciting personalities in their own right. This weekend, we’ll see Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios compete in his second-ever Smash Ultimate tournament, and ZeRo’s old rival Leonardo “MKLeo” Lopez Perez will attempt to solidify his claim for world No. 1.

Tune in on Beyond the Summit’s Smash Twitch channel to catch all the action live.
