Following last week’s speculation-fueled teaser, Blizzard finally gave us more information about Overwatch’s new hero. It’s none other than Baptiste, the character that was at the center of the teaser itself.

A combat medic by trade, Haitian native Jean-Baptiste Augustin was orphaned during the omnic crisis and became emboldened to help the cause. He joined a militia group called the Caribbean Coalition, in order to “fight for a better world...one bandage or bullet at a time.” During his time in the Caribbean Coalition, Baptiste fought fiercely to protect his friends and comrades, bringing both combat and medical skills to the field.

Once the omnic crisis came to its inevitable end, Baptiste found himself unable to adjust to civilian life, and when mercenary group Talon showed an interest in his skills, he hastily joined up. However, Baptiste could not find fulfillment working for Talon, in helping those that he had previously fought. He soon realised that he was in danger.

This leads fans to the teaser report, written by Captain Cuerva, detailing Talon’s plans to eliminate or capture Baptiste for knowing too much. Baptiste, currently on the run, took out the three Talon agents sent after him. We now know that he definitely survived, thanks to the origins animation. Cuerva said of Baptiste, “I've never known a medic to be such a good shot, and his adaptability to new situations is a rare talent. All of us have seen our fair share of conflict, but Baptiste was built to survive,” and this was demonstrated by his survival as an orphan and his work in the Caribbean Coalition.

Baptiste should be hitting the PTR very soon.
