German football club Hertha BSC has fielded a League of Legends roster in the Prime League First Division, where it will compete in 2022 due to its acquisition of Team Riverside’s spot, according to sources close to Upcomer.

Hertha BSC plays in the Bundesliga, the highest tier of German Football. The organization’s League of Legends roster will be competing in the First Division of the Prime League, which is just under the Pro Division. This isn’t the first Football Club joining League of Legends. In 2016, Schalke 04 did so as well, with Schalke 04 Esports, by buying a spot in the League of Legends European Championship.

Before taking over Team Riverside’s spot in the Prime League, Hertha BSC attempted to buy Unicorns of Love’s spot, according to sources. This would have placed Hertha BSC directly into the highest tier of the Prime League, but the sale didn’t go through.

According to sources, the team will field a roster consisting of top laner Julien “Fl4mer” Berschuck, jungler Leon “Lamabear” Krüger, mid laner Mateusz “Matislaw” Zagórski, bot laner Samet “Coldraa” Safran, support Nick “Nio” Kartamyschew and German Head coach Max “StormFury” Schaller.

Fl4mer will be the only player remaining from Team Riverside, whose slot was transferred to Hertha BSC. With Team Riverside, Fl4mer managed to finish first in the Prime League Second Division and qualified to the First Division.

Lamabear played for EURONICS Gaming in the Prime League and finished ninth place last season. He also played a split with Mysterious Monkeys in the EU LCS in 2016.

Also coming from EURONICS Gaming, the polish player Matislaw is best known for his second place finish at the European Masters Spring 2020 with his team K1CK Esports. He qualified to this event three times during his time with K1CK.

StormFury, like Lamabear and Matislaw, also hails from EURONICS Gaming.

Coldraa is coming straight from the Turkish Championship League, where he played for Dark Passage. His team managed to qualify to playoffs in both spring and summer. He will be paired with support Nio, who played for cowana Gaming in the Prime League First Division in 2021.

Hertha BSC will attempt to qualify to the Pro Division of the Prime League with this roster. It will be interesting to see whether they can bring over some of their football fanbase and become a bigger name in German League of Legends.
