In a 15-minute video released by Nintendo last night, the company gave Smash Ultimate fans a tantalizing first look at the gameplay of the fighting game’s next downloadable character, Persona 5’s Joker.
At 9pm ET today, Version 3.0 will go live in Smash Ultimate’s servers. Fighters Pass holders (and anyone else willing to shell out $5.99 USD) will then have the opportunity to play as Joker and his persona, Arsene.
According to the video, Joker will have a unique set of special moves, including two projectiles, a grappling hook that can be used for both recovery and offense, and counter that allows him to more quickly summon his persona. Once Arsene is summoned, Joker deals additional damage and gains more potent versions of his special moves. In addition to these specials, Joker’s flashy normals demonstrate the character’s prowess with both knife and gun.
Joker’s release spurred an outpouring of reactions from the competitive Smash scene, most of them positive.

That said, some players expressed skepticism that Joker will be able to compete with Smash Ultimate’s tried-and-true top tiers.
No matter which tier he lands in, Joker is gearing up to be a unique and dynamic fighter who will undoubtedly have an impact on the Smash Ultimate metagame. Check out the full announcement video above—and log on tonight to try Joker out for yourself!
