Zain Naghmi defeated all competitors last night to win Super Smash Bros. Melee The Script 2 regional tournament in Laurel, Maryland. As first seed, Zain’s victory was an unsurprising result for the event, which also featured top talent such as Charlie “AbsentPage” McKinley and Cody “iBDW” Schwab among its top seeds.
Though The Script was essentially a hometown event for the Virginian Marth main, Avery “Ginger” Wilson, an out-of-region interloper, stole the hearts of the crowd at the Falco-themed tournament. After losing to a local Peach main in round one pools, Ginger burned through loser’s bracket, winning nine consecutive sets in order to claw his way to a second-place finish.
Ginger’s first real challenge came in the loser’s semifinal, where he upset iBDW in a 3-0 shutout. To get a shot against Zain in grand finals, he defeated AbsentPage in another upset victory.

The hype continued into grand finals of the event. As commentators Kashan “Chillindude” Khan and Hendrick “DJ Nintendo” Pilar gasped in excitement, Ginger brought Zain to the brink of defeat, pulling out a stunning comeback on Final Destination in game three.
In the end, it was Zain who raised his fist in victory. But few in the audience will forget the performance of Ginger, whose run at The Script 2 almost certainly silenced any remaining doubters who had discounted his seventh-place finish at Genesis 6 two weeks ago as the result of bracket luck.
Do you think Ginger has what it takes to win the next one?
