Trainers can obtain a shiny Wailord in Pokémon Sword and Shield during an ongoing Max Raid Battle event. This event, dubbed the Sea Pokémon Invasion, brings several Water-type Pokémon to the games’ Wild Area.

To encounter one of these aquatic creatures, trainers need to engage with a Pokémon Den in the Wild Area. Dens are easily identifiable, as beams of light shoot out of them, making them easy to spot from afar. Different Pokémon will appear at different levels depending on which Den the player interacts with. The following Pokémon can appear as part of the Sea Pokémon Invasion event:

  • Wailmer
  • Wailord
  • Krabby
  • Kingler
  • Pyukumuku
  • Frillish
  • Jellicent
  • Mantyke
  • Mantine
  • Carvanha
  • Sharpedo

For the most part, any Pokémon that trainers encounter will have a standard shiny rate. However, one Den features a Wailord that is guaranteed to be shiny. Unfortunately, there is only a 2% chance of encountering this Wailord in this Den. So trainers will still need to get rather lucky to encounter this special Pokémon.

More about the shiny Wailord event

This event’s Pokémon will appear at level 17, 30, 40, 50, or 60, depending upon which Den they are in. Naturally, the fully evolved forms of each evolution line appear in the higher-leveled Dens. In addition, the shiny Wailord exclusively appears at level 60.

Players may also take advantage of this event to get a Gigantamax Kingler, alongside the shiny Wailord. In the level 50 Den, trainers have a 15% chance of coming across a Kingler with the Gigantamax Factor. Interestingly, this is the only Gigantamax Pokémon available in this Max Raid Battle event.

This limited time event will only last a short while, as it expires on July 19 at 7:59 p.m. ET. As a result, players will need to act fast to add these Water-type Pokémon to their Sword and Shield teams.
