Rocket League extends holiday event, RLCS to finally begin this weekend

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Rocket League developer Psyonix has had a rough week plagued by technical issues. It all started last week when, after an update to PsyNet — which loads players into games and awards XP, among many other things — the service could no longer handle the several hundred thousand players trying to get into their games. As a result, the game had to be put into maintenance mode several times, and the RLCS and RLRS had to be postponed.

Lucky Lanterns event extended in Rocket League

Throughout all of these issues, the Lucky Lantern event continued. This is a limited-time event, however, and fans were unable to consistently earn currency to unlock the rewards for nearly a week.

As an apology and a thank you for players’ patience, Psyonix has extended the Rocket League event for a week. It now ends on Feb. 17, rather than Feb. 10. Additionally, by logging into the game between now and Feb. 21, players will receive 500 tokens for the event. You can use these to unlock rewards until the redemption period ends on Feb. 21.

The RLCS continues this weekend

As mentioned, the opening week of the RLCS had to be postponed, though no one knew until when. Psyonix provided no announcements about when their premier Rocket League event would continue until last night. The first week of the RLCS, rather than the second, will now take place this weekend. Whether this means that there will be a mid-week match day or that the entire schedule has been pushed forward is yet to be clarified. The qualifiers for the top 128 teams for the Rival Series will also take place this weekend, with the league itself likely starting on Friday, Feb. 14.

The Rocket League servers have always been a topic of debate, so this hopefully served as a wake-up call for the Epic-acquired studio. With hundreds of thousands of players on any given day, it’s time for Psyonix to take the server issues seriously. Time is going to have to tell if they finally have.
