According to a report confirmed by Dot Esports on their Monday free agency show, as first stated by Daniel “dGon” Gonzales, Team Liquid will sign Immortals Head Coach André “Guilhoto” Pereira Guilhoto. According to dGon’s statement, there was a bidding war from TSM and Team Liquid to land the Immortals head coach. Liquid’s former Head Coach Joshua “Jatt” Leesman resigned and Jonas “Kold” Andersen stepped in as an interim head coach.
Guilhoto spent most of his time in Europe earning awards for the LEC’s Coach of the Split in summer of 2018 and spring of 2019. He coached Giants Gaming, FC Schalke 04 and Astralis (Origen) in the LEC. He is well-known for his time with Astralis after leading the team to several LEC playoffs and a third-place finish in the LEC 2020 spring split. However, after a 10th place finish and a rebrand from Origen in the summer of 2020, he moved to North America. Guilhoto and Immortals made it to the 2020 LCS Championship, but suffered an early exit in Round 2 after losing to TSM.
TL started the 2021 season well, winning the Lock In tournament, but struggling along the way.
A new era for Team Liquid in LCS 2022
With the likes of Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau, Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg and bot laner Steven “Hans sama” Liv all reportedly joining TL, it will be interesting to see how things play out for this new roster. TL finished second in the LCS 2021 Championship and represented NA at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. Even though they failed to make it to the quarter finals after a tiebreaker loss, they still showed some amazing performances.
Moreover, there is also a possibility that Jo “CoreJJ” Yong-IN may not start when the spring split begins. The addition of these new players and coaches will certainly change the team dynamic heading into the new split. Nonetheless, TL already look like an exciting team with all the potential the roster could achieve.
