Who comes out on top in our rankings?

The 2023 Call of Duty League season is nearly upon us, with the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 drawing closer and closer.

For the first time in the CDL’s history, we’ll see our first matches and event take place in December, giving players roughly one month before live action begins. With this new time restraint in place, nearly all of the CDL teams have confirmed their rosters for the 2023 season. The only exception is the London Royal Ravens, but we have it on good authority as to who the team’s four starters will be.

With all of that in mind, we’ve decided to rank the 12 CDL rosters ahead of the 2023 season. This comes directly after the Las Vegas Legion officially announced its roster, which was arguably the last domino to fall this offseason. Teams have spent millions of dollars to acquire free agents, some baited the community, and others made shocking moves to try and position themselves to win a championship in 2023. But who deserves to be at the top spot in our rankings? Find out below.

It’s important to remember that these rankings are solely our opinion. No team has played a single match, or even scrimmage together, for that matter. The rankings are based on who we think will excel at MW2 right out of the gate, taking talent, team chemistry, and overall structure into consideration. Here are the rankings:

  1. Atlanta FaZe
  2. LA Thieves
  3. OpTic Texas
  4. Seattle Surge
  5. Minnesota ROKKR
  6. Toronto Ultra
  7. Boston Breach
  8. New York Subliners
  9. Florida Mutineers
  10. LA Guerrillas
  11. London Royal Ravens
  12. Las Vegas Legion

There are definitely some highlights within these rankings. Below, we have a list of key notes for the rankings, going over why some teams are placed where they are.

  • While the LA Thieves are the reigning champs, it’s almost impossible to bet against an ATL FaZe team at the start of a season, as long as the core trio is intact. The addition of SlasheR could make or break this team down the stretch, though.
  • On paper, OpTic Texas might be the most talented team in the CDL. However, internal struggles in the offseason might doom this team from the start. OpTic’s early success all depends on how the team rebounds from a rocky offseason. The status of iLLeY’s thumb injury also presents a question mark for this roster.
  • Minnesota and Toronto traded some players this offseason. MarkyB, Bance, and Cammy went to Minnesota while Standy took off to Canada. At least for the start of the season, we rate the ROKKR slightly higher than the Ultra for the sole fact that rookie Scrappy needs to prove he belongs in the CDL.
  • The New York Subliners have a true boom-or-bust roster. The offseason controversy surrounding the team looks to be settled for now, but there’s always a chance something else pops up. If NYSL can stay composed and play to their talent level, they’ll be higher than an 8th-ranked team.
  • We’re higher on the Florida Mutineers than most others. The roster certainly has a lot to prove, but we feel they can truly surprise the community early on in the season.
  • For now, the Las Vegas Legion are at the bottom of the rankings. Based on the Legion’s CDL history, this is where they deserve to be. However, this roster does have potential if Prolute can turn into a solid player and if Temp can have another season as he did in 2022.

As always, these rankings are undoubtedly going to change throughout the season. Some teams will pick up MW2 faster than others, and that could lead to a major shake-up in the rankings. For now, though, this is where we have all 12 CDL teams heading into 2023.
