The Flame Orb and the Toxic Orb are two of the most elusive items in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Unless you got one from one of the Pokémon Day raids, there’s only one way to get these items. Here’s what they are and how to obtain them.
What are the Flame Orb and Toxic Orb?
The Flame Orb and Toxic Orb are items that Pokémon can hold. The Flame Orb will burn its holder, while the Toxic Orb will badly poison its holder. This occurs at the end of the turn – assuming the Pokémon holding the item doesn’t have another status condition. While this is normally a bad thing, certain Pokémon can benefit from it.
Abilities such as Guts, Marvel Scale, and Quick Feet benefit Pokémon with a status condition. A good example of this is Conkeldurr. Conkeldurr has the ability Guts, which increases its attack by 50% when it has a status condition. The Flame Orb will burn it and, thus, increase its damage, which is well worth the small amount of damage it takes each turn from the burn. Since it is burned, it also has the benefit of not being able to be paralyzed, frozen, or put to sleep.
Toxic Orb is less used, but it can work with Pokémon that can’t be burned. Flareon is a Fire-type with Guts, so it can’t be burned and relies on the Toxic Orb to poison it to obtain a status condition. Players generally prefer the Flame Orb, however, because the burn does far less damage over time than being badly poisoned.
How to get them
Unfortunately, acquiring these items can take quite the grind. The only way to get them is from beating the tournament in Wyndon after you have beaten it once. The first time you beat the tournament each day, you will get a Wishing Piece. After that, you have a chance of getting something from a large pool of items.
After you beat the tournament, the Ball Guy will approach you and prepare to give you an item. If he does a dance with his palms open, he will give you a rare item. Should you be lucky, this will be a Flame Orb or a Toxic Orb.
If you don’t feel like going to all the trouble of doing this, there are always trading forums or discords where people might be willing to trade the items. Happy hunting, and best of luck!
