Overwatch announces four-year anniversary event

It’s May, which means Overwatch turns four years old soon. As with every anniversary, Overwatch is celebrating with a special limited-time in-game event. Blizzard has announced that this event will begin on May 19 this year and go through June 9.

Overwatch‘s anniversary event hasn’t changed very much over the years. Like most of the game’s events, there will be new skins and special limited-time game modes. The anniversary skins from past years have had a lot of variety and haven’t followed a consistent theme. Expect to see more of the same this year.

Recent Overwatch events have all had rewards that players can earn by winning games each week. Expect something like this to return for this event as well. There will also, of course, be special game modes in the Arcade and likely a special competitive arcade game mode.

A brief look at the last four years

Overwatch was released on May 24, 2016. It went on to win the Game Awards‘ Game of the Year in 2016. Since then, it has seen growth and success as a competitive multiplayer game and an esport.

The Overwatch League’s first season in 2018 was a big success, drawing in fans and players from around the world. It was the first big esports league that followed traditional sports with city-based teams. It expanded to more cities around the world in its second season. At the beginning of this year, the League was supposed to play “homestands” in each team’s home city, but only the first homestands were played before the coronavirus shut everything down.

While Overwatch isn’t quite as big as it once was, it’s still alive and kicking. The four-year anniversary event will surely bring players back to the game, and fans have Overwatch 2 to look forward to. Be sure to check out the event when it goes live on May 19!
