New Kiriko animated short has Overwatch 2 community asking for a campaign mode

The emotional animated short has OW2 players wanting more

Soon after the newest support arrived in the Overwatch 2 Season 1 battle pass, Kiriko has now received a heartwarming origin story.

In the first-ever Overwatch 2 animated short, Kirko can be seen walking towards her apartment with a box of special fox festival donuts with spirit sprinkles. She runs into a handyman in the building and his deaf granddaughter, who she gives a fox plush to. In return, the girl gives her a fox headband that Kiriko can be seen wearing in her original Overwatch 2 skin.

She groans when she finds out her mom is at her apartment. Upon presenting her mom with the donuts, Kiriko is given a lecture about her diet and her decision to stop training with her mom, who carries a sword on her at all times. Her mom tells her that the city is dangerous, but Kiriko responds that she has the fox spirit.

“Grandma is gone,” her mom answers, “and I will not lose you, too.”

“I don’t know how to protect you. Faith alone isn’ tenough, Kiriko,” her mom continues.

Kiriko said that her mom should believe in her, even if she doesn’t believe in the fox spirit.

As her mom lectures her, Kiriko hears a confrontation in the hallway. Hashimoto has arrived with his gang of goons, picking on the old man since his son owes them money. That’s when Kiriko decides to step in. After using her ability to heal the old man, she turns her attention to the gang.

“You, Hashimoto, have prayed on this city, this neighborhood, these people — for too long. I have a message for you to take back to your boss: This city is now under my protection,” Kiriko states.

After seeing her in action, her mom understands. Still, Kiriko says she will train with her mom again.

It’s a heartwarming tale that also gives some insight into Kiriko’s lore. The Overwatch community applauded the animation, asking (once again) for an Overwatch movie. Others enjoyed seeing Kiriko’s abilities in action, loving the action and cinematography of the short. It also made people question again, however, if Overwatch 2 was getting a campaign as originally promised.

Blizzard had stated in the past that Overwatch 2 would have a single-player mode that explored the heroes’ lore a little more. But Overwatch 2 has launched with only multiplayer modes for now.
