MTG Commander 2020 unveils new counterspell Fierce Guardianship

Just about every Commander release has that one card that is wildly overpowered. Sometimes that card is pretty obvious, like Teferi’s Protection. For cards like Atraxa, Praetors’ Voice, it might take a few years until a card finds its home. That won’t be the case in Commander 2020 – this time, that card is Fierce Guardianship.

Guaranteed to be in the hardest pre-con to find in stores, Fierce Guardianship is an auto-include in just about every blue commander deck. It’s a free Negate so long as your commander is in play.

Just what the Commander ordered

Fierce Guardianship’s introduction to Magic makes it the latest in a long line of free counterspells. Play it alongside Modern Horizon‘s star card Force of Negation, and suddenly you’ve locked your opponent out of a turn. For more counterspell protection, return an Island to your hand and back up that Force of Negation with a Daze. Then you can pitch that Island to cast a Foil for free! So long as you don’t mind the risk of losing the game, you can always toss in a Pact of Negation for more free value.

While you’re at it, don’t forget about that Force of Will that you’ve had sitting in your hand since the start of the game. That makes at least six free or mostly free counterspells in Commander now.

Fierce Guardianship will fit perfectly into any Commander deck with blue in it, but it will truly shine in heavy control lists. It will match well with Baral, Chief of Compliance and Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle, who benefit the more spells their controller cast. Wizard tribal decks will also love this card for the added protection against board wipes and targeted removal.

While it has not been revealed which Commander 2020 deck this card is in, it does play well with Kalamax, the Stormsire. Getting two copies of a free counterspell in the middle of another player’s turn seems pretty darn good.
