Modern Warfare was December 2019’s best-selling game

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

According to a report by NPD Group, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the best-selling game of December 2019. This was across all consoles in the United States and based on dollar sales, not total units sold. So, in theory, another game could have sold more units but wasn’t as expensive as Modern Warfare. Since its release in October, Modern Warfare has been at the top of every best-selling games list. While fan perception isn’t what it used to be, this shows that Call of Duty is still king of the FPS genre.

Modern Warfare leading the way

Though one could argue Modern Warfare is a lacklustre entry in the series, obviously fans in the U.S. are still purchasing the game. While it wouldn’t be close to the best-selling title in other countries, U.S. sales are a good indication of how a game is doing.

In December 2019, Modern Warfare led the way in terms of sales for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch, however, was the best-selling console, followed by the PS4 and Xbox One. Keep in mind, this is only for the United States.

In addition to the best-selling titles and consoles, NPD also gathered data on the video game industry as a whole. According to the group, total video game sales for December stood at $2.984 billion, which is a slight decrease compared to other months. Video game hardware and accessory numbers were down as well.

This is most likely due to the fact that not a lot of new games are released in December. Though, one would think the holidays serve as a big boost to overall numbers. Either way, the fact that Modern Warfare still stands atop the rest shows that Call of Duty isn’t going anywhere.
