The League of Legends Pro League (LPL), China’s main League of Legends league, has faced a lot of setbacks and delays due to the spread of the coronavirus in China. Earlier this week, the LPL announced that the remainder of the matches will be played out online, rather than in the live venues. The new schedule changes the number of games played for most days of the week.
The LPL Spring Split continues March 9
The new schedule, first released on the Chinese Weibo, confirms the earlier announcement from the LPL in which the games continue March 9. There will not be an English broadcast of the LPL until March 15. However, those who are interested can watch the first six days of play on the Chinese broadcast.
To make up for several missed weeks, there will be a drastic increase in the number of series played each day. Previously, the LPL was set to broadcast matches Monday to Sunday already, expanding their broadcast days further than any other region. However, now the number of series played each day is increased from two series to three series a day. This is the case for each day of the week, with the exception of Tuesday.
Because of this updated schedule, teams will sometimes have to play a third series in one week. With the updated schedule, assuming there are no further delays, the Spring Split will end on April 19. April 19 is two weeks after the expected end of the LPL Spring Split. The LPL Spring Split Playoffs date could be affected by this two-week extension. In the past, the Playoffs for the LPL happened within two-to-four days of the regular season’s completion.
Circuit point adjustments
There are rumors going around of an adjustment to the circuit point system of the LPL playoffs. A journalist close to the LPL shared in a tweet that the circuit points could see a massive overhaul. The changes are expected to be revealed ahead of the Spring Split Playoffs. Above is the image of the alleged changes. These changes could impact which teams qualify from China to the 2020 League of Legends World Championship.
