While they aren't as bad as the 10 minute timers that shipped during PBE testing, these five minute timers could signify that the level of interest in TFT's launch was slightly higher than Riot initially anticipated.

In preparation for the game mode's debut on the live servers, Riot implemented a list of precautions to defend against the the large amount of people trying to get into games at once. The servers haven't completely collapsed yet, and this fix is supposed to keep it that way.
Teamfight Tactics UX designer Ed "SapMagic" Altorfer confirmed that if the server still looks like it could crash from high traffic even with wait times in effect, more extreme measures like login queues could take place.
