Excel Esports have signed mid laner Son “Mickey” Young-min, according to a report by Turkish esports media company Esporin.
Esporin’s source also claimed that Excel UK mid laner Joran “Special” Scheffer will fill in for Mickey if the Korean player experiences visa issues while attempting to join the British team.

Prior to signing with Excel, Mickey spent the last split as the mid laner for APK Prince, a Challengers Korea team. In joining Excel, he will draw from his ample experience in the big leagues. Mickey spent months on Team Liquid’s roster between 2017 and 2018, and played a stint for the Golden Guardians last summer. He did, however, abruptly and infamously quit the team due to language issues and a discouraging experience in scrims.
Mickey is well-known for his mercurial temperament, leaving the ROX Tigers under mysterious (but friendly) circumstances in 2017 and feuding with Kim “Khan” Dong-ha last year. After Mickey left the Golden Guardians, his former teammates went on the record to say that they hadn’t been able to bond with him, though they wished him well in his future endeavors.
If Esporin’s report is true, Mickey will once again be involved with a team from an English-speaking region—meaning the language barrier could still be a problem. But Excel’s management appears willing to take a risk on the Korean player, and a shake-up certainly can’t hurt Excel’s efforts to turn their inaugural season around.
