Park “Untara” Ui-jin is 1907 Fenerbahçe’s new top laner, per an announcement tweeted by the team earlier today. The news follows the Turkish League of Legends team’s Mid-Season Invitational-qualifying run at the Turkish Championship League 2019 Winter Playoffs.

Though 1907 Fenerbahçe topped the TCL, they failed to move beyond the Play-In Stage, losing their group to the Phong Vũ Buffalo in a tiebreaker. Following their MSI campaign, Fenerbahçe announced the end of their contract with top laner Kim “Ruin” Hyeong-min.

Ruin’s exit was good news for Untara, who spent months as a free agent after he was let go by SK Telecom T1 in November. Untara’s stint with SK Telecom T1 was notably unsuccessful, with the team failing to reach the World Championship for the first time. “I felt extremely humbled,” Untara told InvenGlobal in January.

A move to Turkey is not ideal for Untara, who told InvenGlobal that he wanted to avoid the risk associated with competing outside Korea.

“Not only do I want to stay in Korea longer,” he said, “but I also don’t want to go overseas with my current rating...going overseas now just feels forced.”

Facing unemployment, it appears Untara has changed his tune. And with his experience competing for a top-tier organization, his signing may very well give 1907 Fenerbahçe the edge it needs to top the TCL once again.
