The leaks for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II are starting to roll in more frequently as the Oct. 28 release date approaches. While a majority of the leaks are surface level or directly through PC game files, others are exclusive reports from insiders. Earlier this week, one notable Call of Duty insider revealed an entirely new leak revolving around a potential ranked play. According to them, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will see ranked play release shortly after the game launches.
Ranked is a bit of an enigma in the Call of Duty series. Despite the title having a franchised professional league, the Call of Duty League, there seems to be a lacking emphasis on competitive play every year. The past two years have delivered decent ranked modes, though, and most fans hoped that would continue in Modern Warfare II.
However, it was unclear if developer Infinity Ward would deliver a competitive mode. The company’s last title, Modern Warfare 2019, didn’t feature any competitive mode whatsoever. This is the only game to not deliver a competitive mode since Infinite Warfare in 2016, also an Infinity Ward game.
Suffice to say, hopes weren’t necessarily high with Infinity Ward behind the wheel this year. However, leaker @TheGhostOfHope revealed Infinity Ward is set to release their first-ever ranked mode with Modern Warfare II. There is one caveat to that, as the leaker claimed Treyarch, another Call of Duty rotational developer, is leading the development of the ranked mode. This makes sense, seeing as Treyarch took lead on Vanguard’s ranked play mode this year. Vanguard was developed by Sledgehammer Games.

TheGhostOfHope also said MWII’s ranked play will launch shortly after the game releases on Oct. 28. This could put ranked as a possible Season 1 addition, as the first season usually comes out one month after the initial release. There are no further details on the competitive playlist at this time. However, one would think that it would closely resemble that of Vanguard’s, as Treyarch will design both modes.
We should hear more official information about the possibility of ranked closer to or shortly following the launch of MWII.
