League of Legends pro player Norskeren apologizes for racial slur usage

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

European League of Legends professional player Tore “Norskeren” Hoel Eilertsen has apologized after using a racial slur in the chat during a public match. The Splyce support was called out after a “Behind the Scenes” video showed him typing “ngr”, the shortened form of a racial slur, toward one of his teammates.

Norskeren apologizes

“A recent video displayed a shot of my private chat screen that included the use of a completely inappropriate word. I understand the impact of it and I am truly sorry. It was a mistake and it in no way reflects who I am and what I believe,” Norskeren wrote on social media.

While the professional League of Legends player quickly posted a public apology, it was met with a mixed response from the community. Some were angry at his usage of the derogatory term in a joking manner, while others passed it off because the usage of the word was not him trying to convey the same meaning. However, many agreed that it should have been easy enough for him to use a different selection of word choice instead.

Possible punishment?

The video where the clip was taken has now been marked private by the esports organization. It described Splyce’s performance during the 2019 League of Legends European Championship (LEC) season and the results at the 2019 World Championships.

Other instances of racial slur usage and even toxic in-game behavior have been dealt with by Riot Games through fines and game suspension. However, it is currently not the competitive season, and the offenses were not in a professional environment either. A regular League of Legends player would get a maximum of a mute punishment in-game for the same offense.

What do you think about this situation? Should Norskeren be punished, or should it be handled internally within the organization? Let us know about your opinion, and keep up with Daily Esports for all of your League of Legends coverage.
