What does progression identity entail in League of Legends? All traits that identify a player: play style, Summoner Icons, role identity, Summoner Name, Prestige Level, rank, and more are all part of a player’s progression identity.  League of Legends player identities are important to the game and have been steadily progressing since the game released over a decade ago.

“With the intent to add more Progression Identity elements in the future to better show off who you are,” said Codebear in the article released by Riot Games. “It’s essential that each unique item we add fits with the intended League of Legends style and meet our visual quality bars for both fantasy and clarity.”

League of Legends developers are working towards ways to give players more agency over their individual identities. They are also looking to refresh some of League of Legend’s core identity features with a new system style for 2021 and beyond.

Identity Customization and UI Updates

According to the League of Legends developers, they are shooting to release a new identity customization system by the end of this year. This will allow players to pick their border, icons, and other new personalization options with their new system.

The new system will come alongside updates to the user interface of League of Legends. Over the last ten years, the League of Legends client itself has not seen many updates. The developers want to clean up some of the old and untouched styles through the client and bring them into 2021 standards.

Ranked Emblems/Regalia and Titles

League of Legends has always had some sort of design attached to whatever rank you achieve. However, the developers feel this style is outdated. They’re looking to update it instead. Their primary goal is to make sure that the value of achieving a new rank does not lose its value. To combat this, they will be attempting to remove the complex texture and faction alignment that comes with the current regalia options. This will smooth things out and allow the developers to build upon a player’s progression identity.

Another addition potentially coming to League of Legends is titles. We have seen titles in Riot Games’ most recent title VALORANT, which released in 2020. These titles are earned through achievements and progression through the battlepass. Titles could be coming to League of Legends in the future as yet another addition to identity progression changes.
