LA Guerrillas bench Spart for Gunless after 0-2 start in Major III

A tough decision for the organization

The LA Guerrillas made the choice to bench Kris “Spart” Cervante in favor of Peirce “Gunless” Hillman on Tuesday. Spart was famously promoted to the starting roster last month while Gunless was sidelined with health problems.

During that time, Spart led the Guerrillas to a miracle run at Major II, which culminated in a victory. After the event, the Guerrillas elected to keep Spart on the roster while Gunless was still recovering. However, after an 0-2 start in Major III and a poor performance at the Pro-Am Classic, LA has gone with Gunless again.

This is a decision many CDL fans saw coming. At some point, the question of starting Gunless or Spart was going to arise again. Many didn’t think it would be this soon, though. However, the LAG performing the way they have been since Major II concluded expedited the issue.

LAG released a statement on Twitter providing the reasoning behind the decision. Essentially, with Gunless now healthy enough to play, Spart’s services were no longer needed. Spart will remain a substitute for the Guerrillas but will likely look to join a team in Challengers for the time being.

Despite the roster not winning a match since their Major II victory, Spart was far from the only one to blame, at least on paper. He was arguably LAG’s most consistent performer throughout the Pro-Am and Major III so far. However, it’s clear the Guerrillas want to field the roster they spent so much time and money on this past off-season.

It’ll be intriguing to see how Gunless and the rest of the roster respond after such a rollercoaster the past month. Gunless might be able to seamlessly transition back into the roster, and perhaps this is what LAG need to start winning some matches. However, players like Obaid “Asim” Asim and Austin “SlasheR” Liddicoat also need to play better regardless of who is sitting next to them.
