Kobe “Halo” Hamand signed to the Boston Uprising

Just a few days after Munchkin’s surprising departure from the Boston Uprising, the team has unveiled a surprise signing. Straight out of Contenders, they have signed Helloimhalo (now shortened to Halo). This experienced Lucio player has played on Contenders teams like NRG Esports and Second Wind.

Halo’s history

Kobe “Halo” Hamand first gained popularity while playing for a team in North American Contenders that actually isn’t affiliated with a team in the Overwatch League. This team was Second Wind, and their consistent overachieving nature led to a lot. Both players and coaching staff ended up moving to bigger teams, some even in the Overwatch League now.

However, Halo was one of the few that stayed in Contenders. After his second season for Second Wind, he joined Triumph earlier this year, trying to qualify for Contenders once again. Even though Triumph didn’t get past Atlanta Academy, Halo impressed. His call up to the Uprising was out of the blue, but deserved. As the team’s President of Gaming, Chris “HuK” Loranger, said, “Halo has been competing at a consistent level for years, and we think he has the potential to be a great addition to the team.”

Uprising’s strengthening depth

Now, it is important to mention something that happened during this signing. Uprising Academy, the farm team of the Boston Uprising, lost and failed to qualify for Contenders. It’s hard, then, to not see this signing as them getting more depth. With the departure of Munchkin, they have chosen to commit to their DPS. Even though their current support duo has also been a bright spot, getting an extra player in case of sickness is a good idea. As the players for their academy team couldn’t beat Open Division teams, the organization is clearly looking for depth players to sign.

This fits the Boston Uprising mold of taking underrated players from Contenders all over the world. Of course, as usual, the risk of the team not cohering is always an issue. However, with this signing being just depth, it won’t change their season much. A veteran from Contenders gets their chance in the limelight, and the team gets a backup just in case. It’s a true win-win scenario.
