Kirei abruptly leaves 1907 Fenerbahçe, joins Misfits

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Mere days removed from a Play-In stage exit at the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational, Thomas “Kirei” Yuen appears to have left 1907 Fenerbahçe for Misfits Gaming. This comes as a bit of a shock given that less than a week has passed since the team last played. On Monday, the Riot Games Global Contract Database, or GCD, was updated to reflect that the Dutch jungler had left the reigning TCL champions. He posted a tweet reflecting the move.

It was shortly thereafter that Kirei was added to the Misfits Gaming roster. Kirei’s new team had mixed results between their two squads. Misfits underwent one of the higher-profile and over-hyped rebuilds in recent memory during the off-season, with the word “super team” being tossed around to the point of meme status. They finished eighth in the LEC Spring Split and were considered one of the biggest roster disappointments in European League of Legends history. Their academy team, Misfits Premier, had virtually completely opposite fortunes. They were the stunning winner of EU Masters Spring, dominating the playoff stage in bombastic fashion.

What it means for Misfits

The addition of the Dutch jungler raises an interesting question for the Misfits organization: Where is Kirei playing? The LEC team has Maxlore manning the jungle, a longtime face of the franchise and star player until this past split. Maxlore may have had his worst split in some time, but he still was arguably top-half among LEC junglers. As for Misfits Premier, Obsess had a solid showing on the EU Masters stage, with solid but not star-studded performances. Replacing either of these players seems questionable at the moment, but it could indicate more roster moves out of the Misfits organization in the coming weeks.
