The North Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) team has announced that Markus “Kjaerbye” Kjaerbye will be replaced by Jimmy “Jumpy” Berndtsson, the coach of the team, for the ESL One: Road to Rio Europe tournament. The decision has been made due to Kjaerbye reportedly coming down with an illness and therefore being unfit to continue taking part in the tournament.

Jumpy hops on as the player

It is common to see coaches taking on the role of the player in critical situations and has happened plenty of times before in CSGO. One good example is Wilton “zews” Prado replacing Marcelo “coldzera” David at MiBR during the StarLadder Major, when the latter decided to ultimately leave the team before joining FaZe Clan.

Jumpy has a lot of experience as a player. He started his career all the way back in Counter-Strike and transitioned to CSGO, starting out at FlipSid3 Tactics. His last showing as a player was with Fnatic in late 2016 after a poor result at ELEAGUE Season 2. He later moved to a coaching position at the same team before finally coming in as North’s coach in late 2019.

North caught in a sticky situation

The tournament is already well on its way, with North sitting currently in fifth place, which does not guarantee the team entry to the playoffs from Group B Europe. The team needs to place at least in fourth to advance. The team’s last matchup will be against G2, who are currently placed second in Group B of Road to Rio. North must overcome G2 in order to get into the playoffs. Can Jumpy fulfill Kjaerbye’s slot and step up when his team needs him most?
