Is Black Myth: Wukong a Soulslike?

Did you hear, Game Science — the developers and publishers of Black Myth: Wukong, emphasized that this game is not a Soulslike. Does that put you at ease? It certainly put me at ease, so I picked up the game and I have new insight.

A look inside Black Myth: Wukong

I started out the game, in awe of the beautiful design, and quickly found myself in my first boss fight. Now, if you’ve ever played a real Soulslike, you’ll know that those first bosses usually defeat you several times before you’re even allowed to play the game. Well, here’s how my first hour went.

Not this time. I beat that first boss so easily, it was ridiculous. I did have the minor advantage of having no health bar! So the number of times he hit me was totally irrelevant.

Fast forward to the first area. Hey! These enemies are so easy to beat. This isn’t a Soulslike! It’s just a wonderful stroll through Chinese Mythology. Oh, that’s a big guy. And I’m dead.

Maybe I was just unlucky? This… isn’t a Soulslike, right? Let’s try again.

Phew, managed to beat him this time. Wasn’t so hard. What’s next? Oh hey, a normal enem… I’m dead again. Quick respawn, and that enemy’s a thing of the past. I barely managed to shake off the adrenaline of that fight and hey, who’s that guy with the big head.

You guessed it. I’m dead again.

Right. I think we have enough to answer that question now.

Is Black Myth: Wukong actually an Soulslike?

Absolutely yes. Look, I’ve been playing Once Human for the last month. I’ve died maybe four or five times total, mostly in Lea labs and the Forsaken Giant fights. I just barely started Wukong and I’m at six deaths.

This. is. a. Soulslike.

No matter how many times Game Science tries to deny it, this is a brutally challenging game and you’re in for a wild ride.

You’ll get stronger in time, and these initial enemies will seem like playmates. But when you get to that point, the next enemies are going to be just as brutal, and you can bet on that.

If you’ve never played a Soulslike, however, this is probably your best bet into the genre. It’s not that difficult… yet.

Good luck out there.
