How to unlock the Scythe in Black Ops Cold War

The newest Cold War weapon hit a hiccup Wednesday
This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information

On Wednesday, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players were given a surprise update in multiplayer. A small part of the most recent update was the addition of the Scythe melee weapon, which has been previously rumored to be arriving. However, players weren’t sure it would ever come due to Cold War not being the main series game anymore. After the update went live Wednesday, though, fans were able to complete an unlock challenge for the Scythe in Cold War.

While this was exciting for the time being, Treyarch quickly sent out another patch that removed the Scythe’s unlock challenge from multiplayer.

This has left fans asking how they can unlock the Scythe now. The answer isn’t something that fans want to hear, but it comes directly from the mouth of the developers at Treyarch.

Unlocking the Scythe in Cold War

Unfortunately for any players that fully unlocked the Scythe in multiplayer, they won’t be able to keep the weapon. According to Treyarch on Trello, the Scythe is remaining locked until “later this year.” At this undetermined point, the Scythe will fully be available with the same challenges that were associated with unlocking it in the first place. Those challenges, for multiplayer and zombies, are viewable below.

  • Multiplayer – Using a Melee weapon, get 2 kills while Ninja or Dead Silence is active in 15 different completed matches.
  • Zombies – Using a primary Melee weapon, kill 200 enemies while Insta-Kill is active.

Players that unlocked the melee weapon will have their progress rescinded, but only by one match. So when the Scythe actually goes live later this year, players will only need to complete the necessary task in one match to re-unlock the weapon. If players didn’t unlock the weapon but made progress in completing the challenge, they will retain that progress. Any camo progress that was earned for the Scythe will remain intact as well.

It’s a setback for players who want to use the Scythe in Black Ops Cold War, but the weapon is confirmed to be arriving sometime this year.
