Pokémon Scarlet and Violet continue to bring new seven-star Tera Raid Battles that add returning Pokémon to the Paldea region. Over the past few months, fully-evolved starters like Charizard, Cinderace, Greninja, Decidueye and Samurott have adopted unique Tera Types and challenged trainers in high-stakes raids. Now, Typhlosion is on its way to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
The Pokémon Company has confirmed that a starter Pokémon from the Johto region will become available in Scarlet and Violet for the first time during an upcoming in-game event. Here’s what to know about how to get a Typhlosion in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that has Ghost as its Tera Type.
What to know about the Ghost Tera Type Typhlosion
As with previous special raid events, the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Typhlosion raid will be a seven-star battle available to those who have beaten the game and can interact with Black Tera Raid Crystals. Alternatively, those who haven’t yet conquered the postgame may still be able to participate by joining the party of a player who can access Black Tera Raid Crystals.
The Raid Boss Typhlosion will Terastallize into a Ghost-type during the special challenge. This is a reference to Hisuian Typhlosion, a Fire/Ghost-type regional variant added in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Interestingly, the Johtonian version of Typhlosion will make its way to the game before the Hisuian version.
In addition, players who defeat and capture this special Typhlosion will notice that it comes with the Mightiest Mark. Since it’s not in the Paldea Pokédex, Typhlosion may not immediately become usable in competitive battles. Nevertheless, anyone who catches it can add it to their in-game teams and use it in fights against NPCs and friends.
How to get Typhlosion in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
The Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Ghost Tera Type Typhlosion Raid Battle event will run in two separate waves. This event’s first stretch will run from April 14 through April 16. Then, anyone who misses this opportunity will get a second chance at the Tera Raid Battle from April 21 through April 23.

As of now, it is unconfirmed what moves the Typhlosion will know. However, the Pokémon is generally capable of learning powerful Fire and Ghost-type attacks like Eruption and Shadow Ball, respectively. The predominantly special attacker can also learn coverage moves like Solar Beam and Focus Blast.
It also learns moves like Earthquake, Play Rough, Wild Charge, Rock Slide and Iron Head, though it is less likely to use them since these are all physical moves and Typhlosion is weaker on the physical side.
Regardless of Typhlosion’s moveset, the Legendary Treasure of Ruin Chi-Yu will likely be a strong counter. As a Dark/Fire-type, Chi-Yu resists moves like Eruption, Shadow Ball and Solar Beam. While it is weak to Fighting, this means the Typhlosion could only combat it with the fairly inaccurate Focus Blast.
Meanwhile, Chi-Yu can raise its own Special Attack with Nasty Plot and deal massive damage with a super-effective Dark Pulse.
