How to equip the Overkill perk in Modern Warfare 3

A new way to equip two primaries

Even though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has changed some aspects of how multiplayer works, many of the same features players know and love are still present. However, sometimes, these features are disguised as something new, which can be confusing for players at first. One of the prime examples of this is with Overkill, which has returned in Modern Warfare 3 but not in the traditional sense.

In the past, Overkill has always been a perk that you can equip in one of your slots on a loadout. Once the perk was equipped, you could then select an additional primary weapon to use in place of a secondary weapon. Luckily for fans of Overkill, the core function of this feature is still included in MW3, but the way you go about equipping it is a little different.

I will show you exactly how to find and use Overkill in the guide below.

Equipping the Overkill perk in Modern Warfare 3

Instead of Overkill being a perk like in previous years, it’s actually a Vest in MW3. Vests are a new aspect of loadouts that act as a Wildcard of sorts. Every single loadout must equip a Vest on each loadout, and all of the Vests act differently from one another.

One Vest increases your Tactical Sprint duration and cooldown while another gives you two Tacticals, but no lethals, and an extra Gear slot. However, if you’re looking to equip Overkill, you need to select the Gunner Vest or the Overkill Vest. You can equip either one of these Vests, or any other, by going to a loadout and then clicking the Vest icon above your first primary weapon’s slot.

From here, you can choose from every single Vest and read/see their effects. The Gunner Vest gives you an additional primary weapon, just like traditional Overkill, but also removes your Boots slot. In addition to those effects, you deploy with max ammo at the start of a match and you gain improved reload speed.

As for the Overkill Vest, this lets you decide between using either two secondaries or two primaries. Of course, they can’t be the same weapons, so you need to select two different ones. This is the first time we have ever been able to select two secondary weapons on a single loadout, making the Overkill Vest a little more versatile if you want to wield two weapons from the same category.

All Vests in MW3

You also need to decide if it’s worth giving up some of the benefits of the other Vests in MW3. For example, there is one Vest that allows you to refresh Tactical Sprint faster, which is extremely crucial to those looking to play aggressively.

To make sure the Gunner Vest or Overkill Vest is what you want, check out all of the other available Vests in MW3 below.

  • Infantry Vest – Increases Tac Sprint duration and reduces refresh time.
    • Duplicate effects do not stack. If equipped with Running Sneakers, gain the effects of Lightweight Boots.
  • Engineer Vest – Spot enemy equipment, Field Upgrades, and killstreaks through walls. Aiming down sights highlights them for the team. Faster Field Upgrade charge.
  • Demolition Vest – Resupply Lethal and Tactical Equipment every 25 seconds.
  • CCT Comms Vest – Increases duration enemies stay on radar and zooms out radar for you and nearby allies. Enemies you kill drop intel packs, which generate a radar ping for you and nearby allies when collected.
    • Duplicate effects do not stack. If equipped with Data Jacker (Gear), gain the effects of Mission Control Commlink (Gear).

You have to make the best decision for yourself, but the Overkill Vest and Gunner Vest are intriguing options in MW3.
