Riot Games has found a new way to reward its League of Legends esports viewers. Today, they introduced Drops, a system where viewers receive rewards while watching an official game. These items will drop when a major event happens during a match, such as Baron steals, pentakills, or a series going into a major event. For Riot Games and its viewers, using Drops is an innovative way to keep the show’s ratings up while keeping the viewer engaged.
Since more people have been at home due to the pandemic, Riot believes it’s the perfect time to start doing something different. Since it has canceled the Mid-Season Invitational this year, it’s important to keep viewers engaged for the Summer Split. So far, one of its newest ways to enhance the user experience and user interaction is through Drops. Riot hopes to eventually expand the program to other areas outside of live LCS matches.

How to receive and claim Drops
The feature will be available starting the third week of the LCS and LEC. Viewers who watch the Summer Split games will receive rewards such as chromas, skin shards, Clash tickets, and prestige points. To qualify for these rewards, viewers must be logged in to the official LoL Esports website. Once logged in, they must make sure they have opted in to receive rewards as well as notifications. They will also be able to keep track of the drops they’ve collected through an enabled Drops tab. Players regardless of region or servers are able to claim their rewards.
While watching a game, Drops will be shown on screen if a major moment takes place. The Drop can be claimed on the Drops tab of the viewer’s profile.
Unfortunately, those who comfortably watch live games on YouTube or Twitch are unable to claim their rewards.
