A Heroes of the Storm developer has stated that there are no plans for organized Heroes of the Storm play at BlizzCon during yesterday’s Reddit AMA.

"We're still in the process of planning BlizzCon, but at this point there are no plans for organized Heroes esports,” wrote HotS production director, Kaeo Milker. “I would love to see some games played - exhibition or otherwise - but no promises there."

While the statement doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of HotS esports appearing at BlizzCon, it still comes as a blow to a community that is still recovering from the elimination of its official, competitive scene.

Last year, Blizzard announced it would be drastically scaling down development and support for HotS, including the cancellation of the Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm collegiate tournaments.

With the absence of any esport element from this year’s BlizzCon, this biggest question is where this leaves the HoTS scene. The game was moved into the “Classic” category of Blizzard’s portfolio earlier this year, a position it shares with StarCraft II and StarCraft Remastered. And while those games still have a respectable community presence, the lack of Blizzard support remains a hindering factor.

It’s not all bad news for HotS fans, as the dev team confirmed in the same AMA that they were working on adding new heroes to the game. If Heroes is allowed to continue its evolution, and remains supported by the community, the game will be able to survive a smaller BlizzCon presence.
