G2’s SmithZz announces retirement from pro CS:GO scene

G2 Esports CS:GO French player Edouard “SmithZz” Dubourdeaux has announced his retirement. He served as the team’s AWPer before becoming their coach in 2017. Through a Twitter post, he expressed his reason as to why he’s leaving and his plans moving forward.

New Beginnings

SmithZz titled his retirement note as “New Beginnings”. While he thanked his team for all of the opportunities in past years, he states he is no longer interested in being a professional player.

“I want to thank my last home, G2 Esports, and I wish them nothing but the best … I could not have dreamt of a better organization to end my career at.”

SmithZz explains that his 15-year long career has finally come to an end, and that he’s looking forward to the hard work he’ll put in for his future.

Future project ahead for SmithZz

Continuing into the note, SmithZz shares that he plans to continue playing CS:GO on his own time via streaming. In 2019 he began transitioning into a streamer career, which most likely made this an easier decision. Additionally, he shares that he is working on a project to make professional CS:GO more accessible to the community. The details on this upcoming plan are not yet known.

“Reinforcing the link between those two worlds, something that is not easy to do when you are active pro player. This new challenge reminds me of my younger years in CS, and I’m eager to take it up.”

Towards the bottom of the post, he encourages his followers to watch his streaming channel. He also encourages anyone interested in being a part of his new initiative to reach out via email.

Fond farewells

Following his announcement, plenty of pro players publicly reached out on Twitter to thank him for all that he’s done. One of the notable responses came from Jérôme “NiaK” Sudries, G2 Esports’ CS:GO Manager.

We wish the best for SmithZz and everything he has planned in the future. Moreover, we hope he finds success in his new upcoming project in the CS:GO community.
