Forest of Wolves Walkthrough – Black Myth: Wukong

Ah, so you’ve picked up the Soulslike that is not supposed to be a Soulslike. To be fair, it’s not quite as difficult as some other titles, but you’ll still have plenty of challenge in this stunning title.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the Forest Of Wolves and point out all the secrets, boss fights, and collectibles you can get.

Enjoy.

General Tips for starting the game

Firstly, you should have no problem in the prologue. Not having a health bar is great — if only our invincibility would last. Once you’re through the prologue, however, the challenge will ramp up significantly.

Some general tips, especially if you’ve never played a Soulslike…

  • Take your time, try to read enemy attacks before you get too up-close-and-personal.
  • Watch the enemy weapon, not the movements. A perfect dodge occurs when you get out of the way just before an attack hits, so try to judge that perfect moment by the swing of the enemy weapon.
  • Don’t worry about dying, it’s part of the experience as you learn each enemy’s attacks and how best to tackle them.
  • Don’t hesitate to use spells and items, this isn’t a hoarders RPG, it’s a tough game, and you’re in for a challenge.

The Forest of Wolves: Front Hills walkthrough

As you step into this first area, you’ll have a few easy fights. Spamming your light attack usually gets you by these without issue. Make sure to grab the ginseng plant before you head in.

Head up the stairs to find a fork in the road. It doesn’t matter which route you take, so you might as well go for the chest, first.

You can go up and fight an optional enemy to the right of the chest for some additional will, and as you continue on you’ll find a shrine, where you’ll meet an interesting old man.

As you head over the bridge, take a look around. You’ll need to take a path ahead that leads to the left and down to go back under the bridge. for now, continue on, defeat the weak enemies, and grab some Purple Lingzhi on the road. You’ll also find some Gentian to your left in the forest as you head down the path. Turn left here and head back on the other path that leads down and under the bridge.

You’ll see a suspicious character disappear into the forest here. Once it’s gone, inspect the head there to find a Skandha of Form, which is a key item and I have no idea what it does. Seems important though, so don’t miss it.

Continue down the path and to your right you’ll find two enemies and some more Gentian. Keep going and you’ll find a little frog soldier in the river. Take him out, but be sure to dodge when his health depletes — he’ll explode and deal some damage if you don’t.

Keep going down the river to find a Jade Lotus and then a rather tough crow-like enemy. You’ll need to utilize dodge here to avoid some damage, but overall it’s an easy fight.

Once it’s over, grab some more Purple Lingzhi and some Will.

Now head back, and it’s time to have some fun!

Boss Guide: Bullguard

The Bullguard isn’t too challenging. Sure, he killed me the first time around, but I’m terrible at Soulslike games, so you’ll probably do better. I’ve found myself continuously using the light attack, light attack, heavy attack combo, as it tends to stagger enemies and get you a few extra hits.

The attacks to look out for from the Bullguard are as follows:

  • A charge attack, where he’ll scuttle towards you and then deliver a single chop with his axe. Dodge the axe, not the charge.
  • Another charge attack. The other variation of his charge he’ll just charge in and lift his weapon, in an apparent attempt to fling you into the air. It’s just the one swing to avoid here.
  • An overhead swing combo attack. He’ll swing without much warning, and on the second swing his axe will get stuck in the ground for just a second. Don’t be fooled, he follows this up by jumping in the air and striking again. Dodge all three to deliver a few more hits before his next attack.
  • A sideways swing attack. This one he’ll swing with little warning again, following this up with another side swing and then an overhead swing. Again, dodge all three to earn a couple more hits.
  • A surprise attack. When you’re behind him, he’ll suddenly turn and swing at you, so don’t spam too many attacks from behind. Hit him a few times and back off.

Take him out and move on. If you struggle on this fight, boy, do I have bad news for you! Things only get more difficult from here.

Head up the stairs and fight two enemies in this area plus get some more Purple Lingzhi and move on to find Aged Ginseng up the path. There’s another weak enemy further down, and as you approach the final bit of this area, you’ll find some more Gentian.

To your right is a meditation spot, which you should utilize, and then to the left and through a narrow crack in the rocks is the next area.

The Forest Of Wolves: Outside the Forest walkthrough

This area starts with you turning into a Cicada. This transformation is very temporary though, and I ended up turning back to normal right next to an enemy that proceeded to send me right back to the start.

I’ll take it from the start. As you head down the path, you’ll find two weak enemies. Defeat them, and remember to smash the pots for some extra Will. At the fork in the road just ahead, turn left to discover some Purple Lingzhi. Keep going down this path for some Ginseng, another enemy, and more pots.

Right after this, you’ll find yet another fork in the road, plus a tougher enemy and a chest. Don’t underestimate this guy, he’s the one that put me down after I transformed back from the Cicada. He’s very easy to deal with once you know what to expect though.

Just take your time, dodge his attacks, and take him out. Using the freeze spell is great here. His trickiest attack is a four-swing combo which ends in him burying his sword in the ground. This is a great opportunity to attack.

Grab the chest and head left for more goodies. Heading straight at this next little fork you’ll see a Ginseng plant. Careful though, it’s a tough enemy. This thing is super easy to beat, just wait for him to complete his four attack combo and he’ll flop down on the ground for you to wail on him.

Yes, you’ll still get the Aged Ginseng. There’s a looping path just to the left of this Ginseng monster, but I didn’t find anything there, so head right (unless you want to double check!).

There are two enemies just opposite the little stream which are easy to take out. They’re guarding some more Gentian. Now take the little mountain path to your left to find Purple Lingzhi, then keep heading down the stream towards the waterfall.

At the base of the waterfall you’ll find a pretty tough crow enemy (the same kind as from the first area). He doesn’t seem to be guarding anything though, but you can still take him on for the will he provides — it’s a decent amount.

Finally, to the left of the waterfall (from where you approached) there’s another enemy on the path and some Jade Lotus in the water. If you head back to where the two enemies were before (on the other side of the stream) you’ll also find some more Jade Lotus in the water to your left.

Be careful near the bridge, there’s a ranged enemy on top of it, but it’s time to head back the way we cam and approach the bridge from where we found the chest (this is the easiest angle in my opinion).

An arrow shows the bridge that a player must cross to fight a ranged enemy in The Forest of Wolves.

Spin your staff to block the flurry of range attacks, after which you can approach this enemy and beat him easily. Head down the path behind him and to your right you’ll find some more Gentian — grab it, and continue down the path to your right to find two more enemies, one nearby, and another by a bridge.

Do not fight that guy with the big head just yet. He is really tough. If you’re familiar with Soulslikes, maybe you can do it, but I wouldn’t advise it.

Now you have a choice. You can either cross the bridge where the ranged enemy was and keep going straight and through an archway that leads to another boss battle (Guangzin), or you can run past the big head guy and all the way to the next shrine, where you’ll be able to craft armor. The choice is yours.

Once you’ve crafted armor, come back to face Guangzin.

Boss Guide: Guangzin

This enemy was a real pain to deal with. I’ve heard others saying he was easier than the next boss, but I disagree. For some reason, I had real trouble dodging his attacks. Here’s what I learned, so maybe you don’t have to struggle as much.

First, make your way across the bridge with the ranged enemy and go straight until you find an archway. Head through it to start the fight with Guangzin.

His attacks are kind of hard to predict the first time around, and they’ll also set you on fire. Cooling powder can be helpful here (which you can buy form the Shrine shop), but in typical RPG fashion, I’m hoarding items and went in raw.

Here are the attacks I noticed.

  • Three swings. He’ll start this attack with a little run up and jump to swing his polearm three times, with small pauses in bewteen. The final swing his larger, and this is an opportunity to get a few hits in.
  • Five Swings. He’ll start this sequence with a little slow spin, then swing at you, give a little overhead twirl and then swing again. Then he’ll rush you with a vertical swing followed closely by another, and then a twirl and a final swing. Once he’s done, get a few hits in.
  • Basic three Swings. This attack starts without much warning, as he swings his polearm over one shoulder suddenly, followed by two more quick swings. (He followed this up with a charge attack.)
  • Charge attack: He’ll take a stance in which the polearm is held vertically by his side. Get ready to dodge and you’ll have to time it just right. This attack is really powerful. He follows the first charge up with another one from the other side, so be ready to dodge again quickly.
  • Flurry attack: He’ll do a little somersault here, then spin his blade while charging forward. This seems like a good opportunity to attack when he’s done.
  • One hit attack: He’ll start this attack by doing a flip away from you, and then charge forward for a single hit attack.
  • Throw weapon attack: This starts with another little flip and spin backwards, then he draws back his weapon and throws it at you.
  • Heavy attack: He starts this attack by doing a series of spins while his polearm is aflame. He then jumps into the air and strikes with stunning speed, this one’s hard to avoid, and it will set you on fire as well.
  • Polearm combo attack. With this attack, he’ll raise his polearm into the air and slam the ground, and then repeat this three more times, for a four-combo attack. The last hit is a heavy slam and once avoided, you’ll be able to get some hits in again.

Those are all the attacks he threw my way. There’s a lot, and so there’s a lot of room for variation. It’s a tough fight and it may take a few tries, but overall not too bad. If you’re ever on fire, three quick dodges seem to put out the flames.

Be sure to pick up some Will (glowing green wisp), and ring the bell before you leave.

If you decided to fight him first, now’s the time to run past the big head guy (Wandering Wight) and down to the next Shrine.

The Forest of Wolves: Guanyin Temple walkthrough

The temple has a few things to collect, so take a look around the initial area before you head in to face Lingxuzi. This is a tough fight, sure, but it only took me — a novice to Soulslike games — two tries to figure him out.

Boss Guide: Lingxuzi

His attacks are all quite simple with big tells. The first attack he hit me with is a swipe, followed by another swipe (that second one caught me off guard).

He tenses up before just about every attack, so just keep an eye on his body language and you’ll know something’s coming. Be ready to dodge, and you’ll do just fine here. Making good use of the spell and transformation you have here is highly recommended.

When he jumps up onto the roof, look out. He’ll jump around up there a bit, and then pounce down, releasing a shockwave. You have to get out of that shockwave range. This is how I died the first time. He floored me, and then immediately did this upwards swipe attack where he hits you several times and there’s nothing you can do.

That’s about all there is to beating Lingxuzi. Honestly, I feel like he is the easiest boss so far. He moves around a lot, which is kind of annoying, but whenever he stops to lick his paw — that’s your cue to get some good hits in.

Explore the temple thoroughly to find some Nine-Capped Lingzhi, a chest containing some common items, a Jade Lotus in the water, and a health boost reward in one of the pots as you transition to the next area.

Beyond this, you’ll find the next shrine and the next area, Bamboo Hills.
