One of the biggest stories after the third day of Dota 2’s ESL One Katowice has been the unexpected success of Team Aster, who’ve made it into final eight teams of the tournament surpassing several fan favorites.
While the organization is one of the newer names in the scene, its roster is full of familiar faces, many of them cast-offs from organizations including Invictus and Vici Gaming. However, their success is about more than just veteran players. Aster have shined at capitalizing on mistakes and leaping on teams whose confidence might have taken a knock.
In yesterday’s series against Ninjas in Pyjamas, they simply outlasted their opponent, taking advantage of errors to punish their opponent in spite of an early game lead. Here Chai “Mushi” Yee Fung’s Timbersaw and Liu “Sylar” Jiajun’s Juggernaut came up big with their commanding late game presence.

Today against struggling compLexity and dismal Alliance, Aster showed just how dangerous they can be. Sensing blood in the water with these teams, their consistent last-hitting ensured a late-game snowball and dominating victories.
Tomorrow we’ll see Aster face a do-or-die moment—a gruelling gauntlet against OG and NiP. OG is exactly the type of team that Aster has done well against this tournament, and NiP have fallen to them before. With tournament progress on the line, Aster will have to prove that the last few days have been more than just an anomaly.
Do Aster have what it takes to go the distance?
