It looks like Valorant has claimed another star damage player from the Overwatch League. Just hours ago, Corey “Corey” Nigra announced via a tweet that he is retiring from professional Overwatch to pursue a career in Riot’s new hit shooter.
Who is Corey?
While Corey isn’t nearly as well known as Jay “Sinatraa” Won, who was the first big name in Overwatch to move on to Valorant, he was still a top-tier damage player. He has been in the competitive Overwatch scene since 2017 and played for the championship U.S.A. team in the 2019 Overwatch World Cup. In 2019, he finally made it to the Overwatch League and played for the Washington Justice.
Corey was a hitscan damage player with a background in Counter-Strike. He specialized in heroes such as Widowmaker, McCree, Tracer, and Hanzo. Despite Washington’s lack of success so far in 2020, Corey was a bright spot on the roster. He is only 20 years old and easily could have been the future for Washington. It looks like they will have to search elsewhere now, however.
His retirement announcement
Corey announced his retirement via a twit longer post. He discusses how grateful he is to have had the opportunity to play in the Overwatch League, but he feels that it’s time to move forward. Like Sinatraa, he has a background in Counter-Strike and fell in love with Valorant.
Corey wants more time to grind Riot’s new shooter so he can improve and play competitively. It would be very difficult for him to try to pursue a career in Valorant while still playing Overwatch professionally. There will probably be some solid suitors in the Valorant scene that will be interested in signing him.

Already, several Overwatch players have made the announcement that they will transition over to Valorant. It will be interesting to see who decides to make the move next.
