Activision announced in March that it would be teaming up with Tencent to release a mobile edition of Call of Duty. In late April, an early beta received a limited release on iOS and Android in select territories. Those interested in pre-registering to be a part of the Call of Duty: Mobile Beta can do so here.

Call of Duty: Mobile is scheduled to be released as a free-to-play game on Android and iOS devices. In-app purchases are expected to include cosmetic items like skins to give players the chance to customize their characters. But as far as actual gameplay goes, CoD: Mobile will be free of charge.

One of the first questions on everyone’s mind after hearing about a mobile version of Call of Duty is how are controls going to work on the mobile platform? Fortunately, it sounds like a lot of thought has gone into this aspect of the game as there are two main control modes to choose from and a whole lot of ways to customize the experience.

Simple Mode

Simple Mode will allow players to automatically fire whenever your crosshair focuses on an enemy. The trade-off to the ease of this mode will be the cost of ammunition, which will be spent a lot quicker than it would be on manual fire.

Advanced Mode

Advanced Mode will allow players to manually fire on their targets and to have more customization options over their weapons including how each weapon is held by default.

Customizeable HUD

Regardless of which mode you choose, most of the HUD component is programmed to be customizeable. This means that you can set where different game elements like throwing grenades, reloading and switching weapons are located on the screen so that you can find a combination that feels comfortable to you.

Sensitivity Sliders

Both the Simple Mode and Advanced Mode will have motion controlled by the phone’s gyroscope. The sensitivity of movement is one of over 15 adjustable sliders located in the settings menu. Like the customizable HUD, these sliders will give you the opportunity to make the experience your own.

Call of Duty: Mobile Game Modes

While Activision has teased that there will be more game modes available in the future, upon release CoD: Mobile will strictly be a multiplayer game. Private matches can be used to play with friends and acquaintances while ranked and unranked match play will be available to throw you into action against random opponents. The following five game modes are expected to be available upon the game’s release:

  • Free-For-All – Every player on the map goes head-to-head in a death match.
  • Team Deathmatch – Players are put on opposing teams in a team vs. team bout.
  • Frontline – Teams spawn at their team base and then fight each other.
  • Hardpoint – Players earn points by taking and holding the hardpoint.
  • Domination – Players earn points by taking and holding designated positions.

The Free-For-All mode will support up to eight players. All of the other modes support up to 10 players.

In true Call of Duty fashion, the mobile game will have plenty of options for weapon loadouts. In addition to the primary weapon and secondary weapon, players will be able to choose between explosive grenades or tactical grenades. They will also be able to choose a weapon skill that works on a timer countdown like the Specialist Weapons in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 did and a perk that will offer an additional in-game boost.

Five loadout slots will be available to save loadouts in so that you have your favorite loadout for specific maps and game modes ready. Here are the confirmed loadout elements:

Primary Weapons

  • Assault
  • Sniper
  • LMG
  • SMG
  • Shotgun

Secondary Weapons

  • Pistols
  • Melee
  • Launcher

Skills

  • Purifier (flamethrower)
  • War Machine (grenade launcher)
  • Death Machine (minigun)
  • Transform Shield (deformable shield)
  • Sparrow (bow)
  • Tempest (electrical bolt rifle)

Perks

  • “Fast Recover” (a better health recovery rate)
  • “Ghost” (enemy UAVs can’t reveal your position)
  • “Demo Expert” (which increases the damage of explosives)

Players can choose an anonymous avatar and customize their clothing, headgear and backpack, or they can play as one of six players popularized by other Call of Duty games:

  • Alex Mason (Call of Duty: Black Ops)
  • David “Section” Mason (Call of Duty: Black Ops II)
  • Thomas A Merrick (Call of Duty: Ghosts)
  • Simon “Ghost” Riley (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
  • John “Soap” MacTavish (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Series)
  • John Price (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Series)

Call of Duty: Mobile Maps

The mobile version of Call of Duty will release with seven maps. These maps should be instantly recognizable to fans of the franchise and should fit in well with the format’s smaller playing pools.

  • Crash - “Downed Sea Knight in a desert town. Fantastic team games.”
  • Crossfire - “Small desert town. Intense interior fighting and strong firefights.”
  • Firing Range - “Military practice facility. Hectic Domination games.”
  • Hijacked - "Luxurious super yacht. Frantic, yet controlled close quarters engagements."
  • Killhouse - “Speedball style warehouse interior. Great for small teams.”
  • Nuketown - "Nuclear testing grounds. Lots of fast paced action."
  • Standoff - “Border town between China and Kyrgyzstan. Classic engagements and destinations to fight over.”

Call of Duty: Mobile Scorestreaks

Players will be able to use up to three Scorestreaks per game. These will be unlocked with in-game XP. Activision has confirmed that the following Scorestreaks will be available in CoD: Mobile:

  • Air Supply Drop
  • Counter UAV
  • Drone
  • Hunter Killer Drone
  • Missile Strike
  • Recon Car
  • SAM Turret
  • Sentry Gun
