Cloud9 confirms that Martin “STYKO” Styk will be their fifth player at ESL ONE Cologne.

STYKO actually sent a post on Instagram saying that he would be a stand-in for Cloud9, replacing Pujan “FNS” Mehta. The organization then went on social media to state that they would be loaning STYKO from mousesports.

Mousesports (Mouz) made the decision to bench Styk earlier this week. Stepping in his place is star player Janusz “Snax” Pogorzelski, who was with Virtus.Pro for almost five years. Mouz believes that Snax will be able to push their team above the competition at ESL ONE.

It was a surprising decision by Mouz, given the fact that they have had plenty of success over the past few competitions. Styk was a part of the Mousesports team that was able to win first at StarSeries i-League Season 4 and first at the V4 Future Sports Festival. This would push Mouz to second in the world rankings, which would be their best placement yet. Mouz’s team composition will also need to change since Snax is a flex player and STYKO is a support.

Now, the lineup for Cloud9 stands as:

  • Tarik “tarik” Celik
  • Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham
  • Will “RUSH” Wierzba
  • Timothy “autimatic” Ta
  • Martin “STYKO” Styk

What does STYKO mean for Cloud9?

Unfortunately, there are a few questions that are running through Cloud9 fans’ minds. For example, as a support player, how will STYKO truly benefit Cloud9? Many people have said that Cloud9 needed either a great in-game leader or an increase in firepower. However, they are not sure if STYKO fits any of those roles. Also, STYKO has not been performing great as of late, even though Mouz has been doing relatively well. Other fans speak on how they would have preferred the team pick up recently benched Nathan “NBK-” Schmitt or Fabien “kioShiMa” Fiey.

On the other hand, many C9 fans are optimistic about the acquisition of STYKO. The introduction of a new environment could be good for his growth as a player. Also, giving Cloud9 a support player could help the other stars on the team, especially with call outs and map information.  We will need to wait and see if STYKO can prove himself with a new team, on one of the biggest stages.

ESL ONE Cologne will run from July 3-8, with $300,000 at stake. You can find Cloud9 and their new support player in Group A of ESL ONE where they face off against Ninjas in Pyjamas in Round One. A great story that could unfold during the group stages is if Cloud9 is able to defeat Ninjas in Pyjamas, then the winner of the ENCE/Astralis match. (I’d put my eggs in the Astralis basket for that one.) If mousesports can make it to the third round as well, Cloud9 would face off against STYKO’s former team. Cloud9 could help Styk get some kind of revenge on the team that benched him.
