Veteran Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg has announced his retirement from professional League of Legends. TSM released a video titled “TSM Bjergsen Announcement” on October 24 shortly after their 0-6 performance at Worlds 2020. Bjergsen spoke about his thoughts of retirement throughout the 2019-2020 season and his new position as head coach for TSM.

One of the greatest mid laners in League of Legends, Bjergsen started playing in Europe back in 2012. He switched between four different teams in Europe before eventually joining TSM in North America back in 2013. He has remained on TSM for over seven years where he has been the only mid-laner for the team. In October of 2019, Bjergsen became part owner of TSM after extending his contract until 2021.

On TSM Bjergsen has appeared in 10 League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) finals, won 6 LCS titles, and has 4 LCS MVP awards. He is widely known as one of the great North American players of all time and the face of the LCS. TSM’s 0-6 performance at Worlds 2020 does not do his accomplishments, nor TSM’s, justice.

Bjergsen’s retirement from professional League of Legends did not stop him from finding another outlet for his completive drive. He explained in his video regarding his retirement that he felt that he was doing a lot of coaching already by being a veteran on the team. One of his favorite aspects of playing was helping the team be on the same page and become better together.

However, his coaching individuals on their own progress was always a side project to his own improvement. He further explained that he had to leave that coaching aspect up to whoever was currently in charge. Now that he has become older and played for longer, he felt that coaching would be a good fit for him. With Bjergsen as head coach, TSM will now have to find a replacement for their mid-laner moving into the 2021 season.
