How to play Modern Warfare 3 in splitscreen Co-op

Play with a friend on the same screen

Let’s face it, Call of Duty is just more fun when you have a friend to play with. While you can go about partying up with a friend in the normal way, you can also party up with someone on the same screen. Modern Warfare 3 supports splitscreen co-op at launch, and you can take advantage of it quite easily.

Splitscreen co-op has always been a feature in Call of Duty, allowing players to hook up two controllers to the same system and let their family or friends play right alongside them. However, the feature hasn’t been as widely supported in recent years as it once was, which has led to bugs and other issues with splitscreen.

While it remains to be seen whether or not Modern Warfare 3 will experience any splitscreen problems, you can see how to take advantage of it in the guide below.

The splitscreen feature was not available during the MW3 beta, but it’s available at the start of the game. As you might expect, the feature works just like it does in previous games.

You and another person in the same room use two different controllers and the screen is broken up into two different windows, one for each player. You control your own window while the other player controls theirs. Just like in years past, the splitscreen co-op feature is only available for console users on PlayStation and Xbox, so PC users won’t be able to take advantage of it.

To see how to use splitscreen in MW3, follow the steps below:

  • Boot up Modern Warfare 3 and go to the main lobby screen
  • Make sure your primary controller is already connected
  • Then, on the lobby screen, plug in a new controller, which will be controlled by the second player
  • On the screen, a new Operator should appear on the screen and a prompt will pop up as well
  • Using the second controller, press A on Xbox or X on PlayStation to sign into a new/exisiting account
  • With the second player’s profile now selected, return to Call of Duty and start looking for a match

If all goes according to plan, you will successfully be in splitscreen and can start playing as two players on the same system in MW3.
