Just like any other Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3 features several different types of game modes for players to enjoy. While there are always a few brand new modes added to each multiplayer experience, the majority of the modes are made up of classic ones that players know and love.
When it comes to Modern Warfare 3 specifically, you will find most, if not all of the classic modes that you have played in previous titles. However, there are a couple of intriguing new game modes that should help provide a change of pace when playing multiplayer.
Below, you can see a list of all the current game modes in MW3 multiplayer.
All game modes in Modern Warfare 3
Currently, there is confirmation for roughly a dozen game modes in MW3 multiplayer. As of right now, this is the confirmed list of game modes for the launch of MW3 on Nov. 10. Activision confirmed the list in a pre-launch blog post.
Here are all of the game modes we know are coming to MW3:
- Team Deathmatch
- Domination
- Search and Destroy
- Kill Confirmed
- Hardpoint
- Free-For-All
- 3v3v3 Cutthroat
- Control
- Ground War
- Invasion
- War
- Gun Game
- Hardcore
As you can see, a majority of these modes are immediately recognizable from previous Call of Duty titles. The classics, such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Search and Destroy, are present as well as some other competitive modes, like Hardpoint and Control.
Perhaps the most underrated game mode from this list, however, is War. This mode was last seen in COD WWII, and it was arguably one of the more popular aspects of that game. War is a largely objective-based mode that sees huge teams battle against each other. One team tries to stop a team from completing objectives while the other fights against the other to complete those objectives in a given timeframe.
Speaking of big team game modes, we also see the return of Ground War and Invasion from MW2. As always, the maps in these bigger game modes will feature their own, larger-scale maps.
Perhaps the biggest omissions from the list of game modes, though, are Demolition and Capture the Flag. Both of these game modes were massively popular in the original MW2 and played fantastically on the base maps. They were also two of the three competitive modes from MW2, which might mean we’re in for another year of Control, Hardpoint, and Search and Destroy in the Call of Duty League/Ranked Play. Maybe Sledgehammer Games will add one or both of those classic modes post-launch, though.

Finally, the newest game mode on this list is 3v3v3 Cutthroat, which sees three teams of three battle across the 6v6 multiplayer maps. You can think of this mode as a bigger version of Gunfight; each player only has one life but they can be revived after going down by an enemy’s hand. The first team to six rounds wins, and you win rounds by eliminating the six other players on the two enemy teams.
